Studio Ghosts:

When you're in the studio painting, there are a lot of people in there with you - your teachers, friends, painters from history, critics... and one by one if you're really painting, they walk out. And if you're really painting YOU walk out.

Philip Guston

I paint as a solitary and contemplative practice, cut off from the buzz of the modern world, a rebellion against the rhythm of our age. Luscious oils are seductive in their rich colors and pungent smell. Materials which have changed little over hundreds of years, making the past always present. They are elements of the earth, brushed on wood, that at once honors, but also is transformative.

Devoutly figurative initially, my work has shifted beyond the human form. In its absence is the veiled shape of memories and desires. I am interested in giving shape to that which is unseen, the past, the natural world, and in the ways we are all connected. A liminal space opens where now I am the figure dipping my toe into the collective unconscious. Layering veils of color, revealing layers of contrary marks, marrying strangers to friends, and revealing light in dark corners.
